What is chronic Hep B?

If you have an ongoing infection with hepatitis B beyond the acute stage (up to 6 months) , you have what is called a chronic hepatitis B infection.

Chronic Hepatitis B infection would be confirmed by a positive HBSaG (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen) test.

If you are diagnosed as having chronic hepatitis B then your doctor will discuss with you how best to manage your condition.  This may mean regular tests to check:

  • the amount of virus in your body (viral load)
  • whether the virus is causing damage to your liver
  • whether you should go onto anti-viral treatment to manage your condition
